She totes a tiny MacBook and massive talent, destined to vivify Canada’s electropop music scene; Christer has arrived! The Vancouver-based laptop princess is humble, describing her songs as uncomplicated and accessible, which were originally laid down in a one-room music studio and sampled from basic beat software. At the beginning of 2008, Christer took her laptop and stormed Vertical Studios with producer Tom Dobrzanski (Hey Ocean!, Said The Whale). Their combined talent layered the beats and elevated Christer’s vocals in all the right places, giving birth to Techna, an imaginative album of deeply addictive dance hits.
Listeners can be assured that Christer (pronounced with a hard “I” like “Christ”) packs an abundance of beauty, sass, and grit into Techna, her debut album. The songs surge forth, a one-woman onrush of frenzied, thumping dance anthems that will catapult you off your seat. Her in-your-face lyrics chart such intimate journeys as physical abuse, substance use, and triumphant love – via Christer’s beatific voice, fans get a grand tour through her bedroom, bathroom, and straight onto the dance floor. The modest production pulsates and pounds with trampling, triumphant energy and flaunts stunning verses, epic melodies and addictive choruses that will keep you humming for days.
Christer cites electronic innovators Miss Kittin, Peaches, and Goldfrapp as the inspiration for transferring her nine years of classical guitar and songwriting experience into beat programming. Techna‘s sound documents a three-year flirtation, courtship, and eventual domination of Apple’s GarageBand software, MIDI instruments and sampled loops, all of which she produced as a part of a Creative Writing degree at the University of British Columbia.
In concert, Christer throws live drums, guitar, and synths up against her electronic tracks, pummeling the songs into a rocking, thrashing, stiletto-stomping show. After showcasing at Canadian Music Week and JunoFest in March, Christer embarked on her first international tour, performing multiple festival dates in Australia to over 10,000 people and sharing the stage with such eclectic groups as De La Soul, Ratatat, Architecture in Helsinki, and Muscles. With a formidable buzz from her live show and debut album, Christer is ready to break the ground on and beyond the international electropop landscape.
