When James of Crywank sent over “Part 2” he had us by the first sweeping arpeggio. We also knew it was the perfect song for a video. There was space, there was extremely specific imagery within the song that could either be played with, or contrasted against the video. It made me think of the best times and worst times of my life, which always come with the question of whether it was myself or someone else who was wrong, and what could have been done differently?
There’s no such thing as existential crisis insurance (except maybe a master’s degree in Philosophy), but it’s apparent that director Seth Smith picked up on the high stakes at work in “Part 2”. On first pass I could easily imagine the old man had been singing “Part 2” to himself for what felt like forever, and depending on how you want to interpret it, maybe he had been…
Which leads me to one last thing that has come up in a “the universe is weird” kind of way - does the insurance salesman in the video remind anyone else of Death from Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey?
